Laser light has been widely used to replace needles in acupuncture. Although many reports have been published on the successful use of laser acupuncture, the scientific documentation has been less satisfactory. Many questions have been open for interpretation, such as the optimal dose, optimal power density, whether or not the effects of laser acupuncture are identical or just similar to needle acupuncture, etc.
Researchers at The Medical University of Graz, Austria have for many years been researching about the phenomenon of laser acupuncture. A special method called "laser needles" has been developed. These are not actual needles but very thin optical fibres which are attached to the acupuncture point without puncturing the skin. This laser has several fibres and thus the effect of using a combination of points can be tested. Double blind studies can also be performed. The researchers have pinpointed the optimal power density of laser acupuncture as well as an effective wavelength. By using functional Magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the researchers have been able, for the first time, to objectively study the effects of laser acupuncture.
This book is edited by Dr Gerhard Litscher, Professor at the Medical University of Graz and Dr. Detlef Schikora, PhD at the University of Paderborn. It contains chapters explaining the mechanisms of "laser needles" and the results of clinical tests. 14 different authors have made their contributions.
